Research Scientist

Peptide Chemistry Unit

IRBM is an innovative contract research organization working across all aspects of drug discovery and early development for different modalities – small molecules, peptides, RNAs and antibodies. We foster collaborations with organizations from the pharmaceutical, biotech and academic sectors to accelerate drug discovery from target validation and hit identification to candidate nomination. Our 200 plus-strong, multidisciplinary teamwork is a state-of-the-art R&D facility near Rome where projects are carried out “under one roof” enabling rapid cycle times and close integration of the scientific teams. IRBM’s scientists have discovered several drugs that are on the market, and more than 25 compounds have gone into clinical testing. The company was founded in 2010, as a spin-off from Merck & Co. Now in our 13th year as an independent research organization, we have laid the foundations to become a global center for excellence in all aspects of drug discovery and early development.

Job Description

The peptide chemistry unit is seeking a talented peptide chemist with a strong and proven background in peptide & macrocycle chemistry, as well as expertise in organic synthesis. The successful candidate will be motivated and passionate about conducting high quality scientific research to advance internal and external peptide drug discovery programs. The candidate will be involved in the design of new molecules to progress structure activity relationship studies and the planning and execution of multi-step synthesis, purification and analytical characterization of complex peptides to achieve agreed upon objectives in a timely manner. The successful candidate will communicate effectively with internal and external collaborators and will work efficiently in a multi-disciplinary team environment.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop and execute synthetic strategies towards complex molecules using state-of-the-art synthetic methodologies.
  • Analyze and identify compounds using different purification and spectroscopic techniques.
  • Contribute to scientific strategies and goals within a project team setting.
  • Present data and reports on project status at individual and group meetings.
  • Conduct laboratory operations in a safe manner. Exhibit safety awareness and safe work practices; comply with all safety requirements according to Italian laws.

  • Expertise in peptide chemistry for the design/synthesis of complex peptides including peptide conjugates, macrocycles, small proteins
  • Design of synthetic routes and synthesis of amino acids and building blocks
  • Mastery of use of laboratory equipment with a preferential knowledge on the use of peptide synthesizers
  • Excellent knowledge of common purification techniques (HPLC, IEX, GPC) and analytical techniques (UPLC/HPLC and mass spectrometry)
  • Knowledge in structure elucidations of organic molecules by NMR and MS
  • Outstanding organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Good knowledge of English is mandatory
  • Good team player abilities

  • Master of Science Degree (Laurea Magistrale) in Chemistry or a related discipline with 5 years of experience doing peptide chemistry in a pharmaceutical or biotech environment.
  • PhD in Chemistry or a related discipline with one or more relevant postdoctoral experiences or with experience in a pharmaceutical or biotech environment.
  • Experience abroad would be considered a plus.

The position will be based at IRBM’s headquarter in Pomezia (Rome), Italy
