May 18th, 2017, ROME – IRBM Science Park S.p.A., alongside other public and private institutions, has supported the activities of the HDdennomore international network, a group of organizations focused on raising awareness and support for Huntington’s disease sufferers worldwide.
Huntington’s disease is a hereditary, progressive degenerative disease affecting the central nervous system, eventually leading to paralysis, inability to speak and dementia. It is particularly dangerous as its onset and severity tend to worsen in each successive generation. It is caused by mutations in the gene for the protein huntingtin, and there is no cure.
IRBM’s Neuroscience unit has been engaged in work on Huntington’s disease as part of a collaboration with the CHDI foundation and pharmaceutical companies that also support the HDdennomore network, yielding ways to identify the presence of the mutated protein in patients and working on specific therapeutic approaches. In addition to these research and development activities, IRBM has also engaged in outreach to support growing awareness for the disease.
As part of the activities organized by the network, IRBM and the other sponsors have assisted in organizing a visit between Pope Francis and a group of Huntington’s disease patients, meant to bring home the suffering of those who are struck by this terrible disease. It is also hoped that the meeting will bring greater attention to HDdennomore’s activities and shape a more comprehensive effort to cure Huntington’s disease.
Builds on Research to Combat Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS)
Rome, Italy – IRBM, a global Contract Research Organization today announced a new research collaboration agreement with MSD (tradename of Merck & Co., Inc., Kenilworth, NJ, USA) to identify and develop novel peptide therapeutics active against different strains of coronavirus, including SARS-CoV-2.
